Mistake Index

The mistakes that are
costing you right now.

Most players repeat the same errors for years because nobody ever named them. We've indexed 200+ mistakes to uncover. Explained, corrected, fixed.

The insight

“You don't know what you don't know. That's exactly why I'm here.”

Shooting

Releasing before your weight shifts to the front foot.

You're shooting with your arms. Half the power never leaves your body — and goalies read you 300ms early.

The Fix: Feel your weight fully loaded on the front foot before the blade touches the puck. Power travels front-to-back, not arm-to-arm.
Skating

Starting the crossover before you finish the turn.

You hand the defender your exact escape route on a skate. They know where you're going before you do.

The Fix: Hold both feet wide until you're almost facing the direction you came from. The crossover earns the escape — it doesn't start it.
Puck Control

Carrying the puck too close to your body under pressure.

You've cut your deke window in half and telegraphed your dominant hand to every defender on the ice.

The Fix: Extend your reach. The puck lives out front and to the side — not tucked under your skates. Wide reach, loose top hand.

Fix Your Game

Skating — Common Mistakes

Select a mistake to see why it happens and exactly how to correct it.

Skating upright through the neutral zone

Why it happens

Your center of gravity is too high, killing edge leverage and making you easy to knock off the puck.

How to fix it

Bend your knees until your shin pads are nearly parallel to the ice. Low drive creates the power — not pushing out to the side.

Crossing your feet on tight turns

Why it happens

You're compensating for weak edge engagement by relying on crossovers too early.

How to fix it

Drive off the outside edge first. Feel the grip before you cross. The crossover is the result of a good edge — not a substitute for one.

Pushing straight back instead of out and back

Why it happens

A backward push wastes energy. The power comes from the 45° angle, not a straight-back kick.

How to fix it

Think about pushing the ice away from you diagonally. Your foot should finish out to the side, not directly behind you.

Dropping your shoulder before the shot

Why it happens

Goalies read upper body rotation before your blade even loads. The tell happens 300ms before you shoot.

How to fix it

Keep your shoulders square. Load the shaft — not your body. The rotation happens through the shot, not before it.

Releasing before weight transfer

Why it happens

You're shooting with your arms, not your body. Half the power stays in the floor.

How to fix it

Feel your weight shift fully onto the front foot before the blade leaves the puck. Power moves front-to-back, not side-to-side.

Looking at the net instead of your hands

Why it happens

If you look up too early, you pull your blade off the puck before full extension — choking the release.

How to fix it

Eyes stay on the puck through contact. Trust your muscle memory for target. Extension first, then look.

Gripping the stick too hard under pressure

Why it happens

A tight grip stiffens your hands, destroys feel, and slows your release speed by up to 40%.

How to fix it

Imagine holding a bird — firm enough it can't escape, soft enough you don't crush it. Loose top hand, active bottom hand.

Looking down when receiving a pass

Why it happens

You lose all positional awareness at the exact moment the play opens up.

How to fix it

Soft hands receive the puck — they find it without your eyes. Keep your head up and let your hands do their job.

Handling the puck too close to your body

Why it happens

Short reach limits your deke window and telegraphs your move to the defender.

How to fix it

Extend your reach. The puck should be out in front and to your side, not tucked under your skates.

The Difference

You don't know what you don't know. Until now.

Meet Your Coach

About Brad Perry

I've coached thousands of players, families and coaches who felt exactly the way you do right now. Searching for answers. I built Aether to answer everything.

🏒 The Journey

Brad Perry picked up the game at thirteen which was already years behind most of his competition. Catching up meant learning fast, and adapting faster. It wasn't about natural ability. From long bus rides through junior leagues to coaching camps at hundreds of rinks across North America, he built skill through experience.

The climb from beginner to pro didn't come from shortcuts or luck. It came from being comfortable being uncomfortable. Brad learned to turn every mistake into feedback, every loss into a lesson, and that mindset carried him all the way to a cup of coffee in the minor leagues with the Toledo Storm. Brad's experience is what drives him to help others reach their goals.

Why This Exists

I almost ran out of time.

I had a stroke in 2024 during a full hip replacement. I couldn't let go of the fact that I almost left without sharing the lessons I learned with the younger versions of me. Just starting out, no answers, figuring everything out the hard way. And everyone like him who never got the help they deserved.

I built this for that person.

And for the pro who still has gaps nobody ever named. For the coach who wants to give their players what they didn't have. For the hockey parent who wants to do right by a kid in a sport that can be brutally unforgiving.

There isn't enough time to get everything in my head out into the world. That's exactly why we're building this. And I'm not stopping.

“Every drill. Every correction. Every breakdown.
All of it is going in.”

What People Have to Say

35+ years. Thousands of players. Here's what they say.

Brad found and fixed two hitches in their skating technique, a hitch in their slapshot, and a number of other things that had gone unnoticed through the years. He then sent us video that showed exactly what they were doing wrong in real time. When you combine that technical expertise with Brad's passion for teaching, you have a winning proposition like no other.

Brad has the singular quality of being able to evaluate each student as an individual. When he watches students skate or attempt a drill, he sees what they have done, what they need to do it better, and finds a way to provide constructive guidance — no matter the ability or prior experience. I can say without question that Brad is a master teacher.

I have been impressed with Brad's analytical and thorough technical approach to skating. Brad's use of video-taping still amazes me — and even more importantly, David absolutely loves working with Brad. That speaks volumes.

The Name

What Is Aether?

Aether is the air above us all. The rare air where the Gods were thought to play. Not something you stumble into. Something you earn. Through the struggle, the sacrifice, and the thousand reps nobody watched.

Most players never get there. Not because they lack talent. It's because nobody showed them what that level actually looks like or how to reach it. That is what we built this for.

“The rare air. Earned through everything it took to get there.”
